Status: Submitted manuscript.

The LIPAc injector consists of a 2.45 GHz ECR ion source and a low-energy beam transport line (LEBT), designed to reliably deliver a 100 keV, 140 mA CW deuteron beam to the RFQ. Long-term operation is affected by erosion of the boron nitride (BN) disk inside the ion source.

The study reports beam tests using a new magnetic-field configuration in which the ECR region was shifted away from the BN disk on the RF-injection side. The reported results show that nominal beam performance could be maintained without significant BN-disk erosion. CW operation was also reached more easily, and the stability of the pulsed-beam flat-top was improved.

Further validation of the approach is planned through long-duration operation.
